CANCER

Cancer kills millions of people a year of all ages. More than half of all malignant cancers disable patients during their most productive years. The Baxter Oncology patients consist its of cytotoxic therapies that treat a variety of cancer types as well as cell selection, storage, washing and expansion products that are primarily targeted to stem cell transplant centers. Leading the portfolio of cancer therapies are HOLOXAN (ifosfmide) UROMITEXAN (mesna) and ENDOXAN (cyclophosphamide).
 

BLOOD DISORDERS

Hemophilia is one of a number if inherited bleeding disorders characterized by an abnormality in the blood’s ability to clot. There is no cure, but many people with hemophilia can lead productive lives with regular infusions of clotting factor, Baxter is a leading manufacturer of both genetically engineered (recombinant) and plasma – based clotting factors. The company also manufactures other therapeutic proteins for people with immune deficiencies and other blood related disorders.

 

TRAUMA

Injury or trauma is the leading cause of death for people under 44. Many trauma victims receive Baxter products – IV solutions plasma volume expanders, blood transfusion products, and other products for fluid replenishment and blood volume stabilization.
 
 
SURGICAL INTERVENTION

Baxter products are used in a variety of surgical applications. Most people undergoing surgery require IV access for solutions and medicines. Precise infusion requires sophisticated electronic infusion pumps to regulate flow. Baxter provides a broad range of agents and delivery devices of general anesthesia. The company manufactures fibrin sealant to facilitate blood clotting and wound healing in surgery. Baxter blood – collection and storage containers are used by blood banks to provide blood and its components to hospitals and surgery centers for transfusions. The company also manufactures ambulatory IV infusion pumps used for patient controlled pain management.
 
INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Infectious diseases continue to cause illness and death around the world. While some infectious diseases have been conquered in some geography through modern advances in antibiotics and vaccines, new threats are constantly emerging. Lyme diseases, AIDS and new strains of influenza like SARS are all diseases that have emerged within the last 20 years. Baxter manufactures TICOVAX the leading new generation vaccine for tick – borne encephalitis (TBE), NeisVac for meningococcal diseases, both potentially fatal illness and Accomb 2000 a prophylactic vaccine that guards against smallpox. Baxter’s Gemmagard SD is being evaluated as first line treatment against SARS.
 
KIDNEY DISEASES

Kidney diseases continue to be a growing cause of illness and death around the world. Patients with end – stage renal disease (ESRD), or kidney failure, require dialysis or a kidney transplant to cleanse their blood of toxins, waster and excess water normally removed by healthy kidneys. Baxter was a pioneer in dialysis and remains the world’s leading provider of products for peritoneal dialysis.
